Overview

A design research co-op opportunity in IBM Security. I was recruited to uncover insights, inform design decisions, and forge new opportunities to improve business outcomes in regards to IBM Security's product offerings.

About the Co-op

I served as a UX researcher on the Threat Management Team at IBM Security, and I was the only undergraduate intern on the team. My research involved identifying and communicating new research questions, conducting studies to capture qualitative and quantitative data for analysis, and delivering actionable insights for the team and key stakeholders.

My Contributions

My day to day tasks moved the team toward creating delightful experiences for security analysts. My experience has included performing literary analysis, screening participants, conducting interviews, writing protocols, creating and testing usability studies, and examining data using respected UX Research methods.

My work is protected under an NDA, but I would be more than happy to discuss my take-aways from this experience.

I synthesized 2 years of data and conducted additional studies to standardize a particular persona for IBM Security as a whole
I created and analyzed an unmoderated study to support new information architecture and help standardize product vocabulary for an upcoming product launch
I justified and conducted a research initiative to validate content on a given page for an upcoming product launch

Top Lessons Learned

Realistic Design Timelines

During this Co-op, I began to understand that all insights and findings cannot realistically be acted upon initially. There are phases for improving UX on a product. I learned how to prioritize and categorize recommendations to best advocate for the end user from the very beginning.

Best UX Research Practices

I worked with some of the best UX Researchers on the market. Under their tutelage, I learned how seasoned UXR teams conduct enterprise-level research studies in a short time-span. The research skills I learned during this 8 month Co-op helped build my research tool-kit.

Researching an Unfamiliar Domain

Security is a very niche and deep domain to which I had no prior exposure. I was trained on how to best immerse myself and understand the domain in order to began building context for my work. The strategies I learned I now apply to almost every project.

Communicating Design Recommendations

I learned how to best convey design recommendations to teams in order enact results. With IBM being such a large corporation, there are many pieces moving at once. I learned what the best communication formats and channels are for making and following up with recommendations.
Testimonial from my team lead, Michelle Chen

“Erin was a phenomenal addition to our user research team over 7 months. She led a research study on a foundational aspect of a key IBM Security product. Collaborating with cross-functional partners, Erin led the coordination of the research study, from defining the research plan and methodology, recruiting and screening research participants, utilizing our research tool’s capabilities for conducting unmoderated user testing, to analyzing and playing back research recommendations to cross-functional stakeholder leaders. Her motivation to learn, attention to detail, and upbeat attitude is inspiring - she'd be an amazing addition to any team!”
